Does KDE.org look funny to you?

Our stalwart KDE homepage, which has been with us for several years, has, after serving us well, finally been retired.

The new KDE.org homepage, using the new theme “Aether”, is only the first step of a much longer journey to unify the disparate KDE websites. KDE.org and its surrounding network is made of many parts: forums, wikis, feed aggregates, custom solutions, etc; beyond the homepage each of these will need to be updated. It will be a long road, but the modernization is due.

This new design is still using direct and simple PHP, but the redesign effort will see us land this into a Drupal theme which will eventually be deployed for the wider KDE.org pages. We will still be using the other systems for our other non-static content, but Drupal will be used to replace any page using our current template engine “Capacity”.

I’d also like to give a special thanks to Harald Sitter for making this very quick and smooth transition possible.

If you spot any issues with the website, please report bugs to https://bugs.kde.org/describecomponents.cgi?product=www.kde.org, and I’ll watch the mailing list as well.

  1. Looks awesome, definitely an overdue change. Nicely done!
I have one issue with it: why does it require Noto Sans to be installed on the system else it uses Arial? On my Mac the website doesn’t look right until I installed the font, it should load the font from CSS or something

  2. Very nice design, looking really good.

There is a little bug with the slideshow: when I loops (going from last image to the first) the last div is removed to early. Its blank when sliding to the first image (same when going backwards).
And the image content/products/plasma.png is a bit to big for a png. It looks good, but 800kb for an image that is displayed at only 800px is a bit too much (not including the other elements of the page).

  3. Looks truly terrific!

Two questions related to the KDE Free Qt Foundation (of which I am a board member):

    1. Do I see it correctly that it is no longer linked anywhere from the new pages? Why?

    2. How will I be able to update the content of the page in the future?

    1. Terribly sorry, that was a complete oversight on my part. I’ll put in the appropriate link tomorrow morning when I get to my laptop.

For now editing the pages is exactly the same, only hopefully you’ll find any code cleaner and more expressive. If you have any issues or questions at all on this front, email the kde www mailing list and I’ll answer anything you may ask.

  4. Congratulations, this new website looks amazing!

What i liked about the old site though is that it highlighted the “Experience Freedom” aspect a bit more. I think it would be worth adding this or a similar slogan as a fifth tab or something.

Otherwise: Amazing design work! Keep it up!

      1. Thank you! The was actually a lot of talk about the community tab, and ultimately it was decided to merge “community” and “support” into “get involved”.

    1. No plan survives the heat of battle!
But in all seriousness, it was the original plan, but the switch to Bootstrap killed it. It will very likely get dropdowns after the conversion to Drupal though – I’d like the header to be well integrated in the future, so for now we have it in a more simple style.
